Protecting freedom of movement and human rights of Roma

9th July 2009 | Strasbourg, France

The Joint CHR, FRA and OSCE Preparatory Working Seminar for a Conference on protecting the freedom of movement and human rights of Roma in Europe took place on the 9th of July 2009 in Strasbourg.

The event’s main objective was the preparation of the conference on Roma freedom of movement and migrations that will be held in Vienna in November 2009.

Panels were organised on 1) the causes of migration, freedom of movement, European standards and causes of preoccupation; 2) access to justice and awareness of one’s rights; 3) country practices and cases: housing, employment, education and health.

One of the preoccupations of the participants in the panels was the risk of deterioration of the conditions of the Roma, because as EU citizens no country is ready to consider asylum requests by Roma coming from new Member States.
