Structural Funds: Investing in Roma
1st December 2011
The use of EU funds and Roma was one of the key topics discussed at the Equality Summit co-organised by the EU Polish Presidency and the European Commission on 14th-15th November in Poznan (Poland).
These annual summits aim to advance equality for all in the EU and to share experience and knowledge to develop effective ways to fight all forms of discrimination.
Under the theme "Implementation of equality policies at the regional and local level", this year's summit looked at the local and regional dimension, a topic increasingly present on the EU agenda. Specifically it addressed the following aspects:
- equality as a factor in regional development
- developing regional and local partnerships
- the use of EU funds for the implementation of anti-discriminatory policy in relation to minorities, including the Roma and Sinti communities
The Summit brought together representatives from the European institutions, EU Member States, equality bodies, NGOs and international organisations.
An Informal Meeting of Equality Ministers also took place during the Summit.
A joint declaration was also to be adopted, in which EU countries committed themselves to introduce anti-discriminatory measures at regional and local level.
