Initiative to support innovative and integrated projects promoting the inclusion of Roma

The principal aim of the pilot project is to support innovative and integrated projects promoting the inclusion of Roma through educational, social, and economic activities, cross border cooperation and exchange of best practices while integrating existing (local, national, European and international) instruments.

The main focus will be on short and medium term results via a selection of projects promoting mainly:

Educational activities for the Roma communities, including preparatory classes, primary education, vocational training, adult education and teachers´ assistants training.
Employment, self-employment, economic opportunities, e.g. by supporting microcredit programme(s) on a pilot basis.
Communication campaigns targeted at the majority population and the Roma target groups: the underlying problem of negative attitudes in the wider community should also be tackled with the highest urgency. These activities may include visits to Member States and training of journalists.
Evaluation methods for policies in support of Roma communities.

The pilot project, with a budget of 5 million €, will be implemented via grants and services/technical assistance contracts. It is planned that all contracts will have been signed by the end of 2009.

The actions will be implemented throughout 2010-2011.
