FRA’s report: “Incident Report – Violent Attacks Against Roma in the Ponticelli district of Naples, Italy”

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) commissioned the report: “Incident Report – Violent Attacks Against Roma in the Ponticelli district of Naples, Italy with the aim to bring together the basic facts on the anti-Roma events which occurred in Italy during May – June 2008. The purpose of the report is to provide the Community and its Member States with a factual overview of the situation during these months in Italy.

As it is mentioned in their conclusions this report illustrates the climate of intolerance generated by the events in Ponticelli and the generally negative subsequent political discourse. The report also presents examples of the critical reactions of civil society and international bodies to the events and to the responses of the Italian authorities.

Also remark that the Racial Equality Directive 2000/43/EC of 29 June 2000 provides protection against discrimination, but clearly the situation of many Roma and Traveller groups throughout the European Union requires more than that; achieving equal treatment requires strong political commitment and urgent action on the ground in the context of a holistic approach developing long term strategies, policies and measures for all areas of social life.
