Seminar: "Combating poverty and social exclusion through labour market participation – a role for the ESF?"

Brussels, Nov 18-19

Aiming at exchanging good practices and recommendations the Belgian presidency gathered in Brussels ESF managing authorities and other stakeholders in order to debate on how to combat poverty and social exclusion with ESF support.

Main topics addressed dealt with initiatives for people furthest from the labour market, initiatives in relation to job quality, initiatives in relation to the creation of jobs within the framework of social inclusion and competence policy to this end.

"Promoting the full integration and participation of disadvantaged groups of people is not only a moral obligation and an expression of our values; it is also an economic necessity," said Commissioner Andor. "We cannot afford to waste an important source of knowledge, skills and productivity." He also highlighted that “The EU needs to make full use of all instruments at its disposal and ensure coherence between them, (...) ESF funding plays an important role in supporting people to get back on track – for example, by helping them to integrate into the labour market," said Andor.
