Since July 2008 the Decade of Roma Inclusion Presidency is held by Serbia
The Decade of Roma Inclusion (2005-2015) presidency is held annually by a participating Decade country according to a rotating schedule. Since July is the Serbian turn, the first non-EU country. Decade goals are to close the unacceptable gaps between Roma and the rest of society and to work toward elimination of discrimination through development and implementation of National Action Plans.
Main principle is to support full participation and involvement of national Roma Communities in achieving the Decade’s objectives.
The government holding the presidency has, among other responsibilities, to develop a work plan describing the priority areas for its presidency year and present it for discussion.
During the last 4th and 5th September 2008 in the 14th International Steering Committee Meeting hold in Belgrade the Serbian Presidency presented the priority areas as follows:
- Housing (legalization and improvement of informal Roma settlements)
- Combating discrimination in Education
- Development of monitoring and evaluation system
- Development of European Roma Policy and access to European Union funds for non EU countries for programmes aiming at improvement of Roma position.
