Spanish initiative for a European Network was presented in Madrid

Madrid, 7-8 June 2007

The Seminar “Transnational Cooperation on Roma Community and Social Exclusion, New Opportunities for the upcoming period of Structural Funds” was held in Madrid on 7th and 8th June, 2007 in order to set the first steps for establishing the European Network on Social Inclusion and Roma under the Structural Funds.

International Seminar, Madrid 7-8 June 2008

This initiative was motivated by the Spanish Government in the framework of a new period of Structural Funds (2007-2013), where the European Commission pushes forward transnational initiatives coming out from the Member States in an enlarged European Union.

The participants came from twelve EU Member States (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Sweden and Spain) together with a wide delegation from the European Commission. Commissioner Vladimir Spidla and Spanish Minister Jesús Caldera made a welcome speech to participants supporting this initiative and the creation of the Network, and they both reinforced the idea of the Structural Funds as an excellent instrument to promote social cohesion and social inclusion, mainly of most disadvantaged groups, as it is the case of the Roma population.

All participants expressed the willing to be part in this initiative and the two-day seminar was devoted to discuss and detail main objectives, common concerns and interests as well as potential activities to be carried out within the Network.
