The consultation aims to gather views on the evolution of gender equality in the EU since the adoption of the 2020-2025 Gender Equality Strategy and to identify priorities for the 2026-2030 Strategy.

The Commission is launching a call for evidence and a public consultation to gather the views of different actors on their perception of how the situation of gender equality in the EU has evolved since the adoption of the current Gender Equality Strategy (2020-2025) and identify priorities for the next Strategy 2026-2030. For the purpose of this consultation, gender equality refers to equality between women and men, in all their diversity.

Equality between women and men is a fundamental right and a foundational value of the European Union. The principle of equality between women and men is enshrined in the Treaty on the European Union, the Treaty on the functioning of the European Union, the Charter of Fundamental Rights, and confirmed in EU secondary law.

The Gender Equality Strategy is part of the Commission’s efforts to build a Union of Equality and the current Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 works towards achieving that goal.

In March 2025, the Commission launched an EU Roadmap for Women’s Rights, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to gender equality and setting out its long-term vision for the full realisation of the rights of women, in all their diversity, in Europe.

In this context and building upon the current Gender Equality Strategy, the European Commission is preparing a new Gender Equality Strategy for 2026-2030 to transform this vision into concrete action, The Strategy will detail specific measures and initiatives to be implemented over the next five years, targeting key areas where progress is most needed. Key focus areas include:

  • Employment and Social Affairs: Closing gender gaps in employment, pay, and leadership positions, and ensuring work-life balance.
  • Justice and Fundamental Rights: Strengthening legal protections and combating gender-based violence and discrimination.
  • Consumers: Promoting equal access to goods, services, and opportunities for all genders.
